What’s In Your Baby Wipes Can Hurt Your Baby
We are going to discuss what can impact the health of your baby. We suggest you take a look at the baby wipes you’re using right now, sure we will wait. If your baby wipes contain any of the chemicals listed below, it would be a good idea to think about the impact these chemicals and others could be having on your baby. We know you want to give your baby the best, and so do we at Little Toes.
Polysorbate 20
Polysorbate on its own is harmless sorbitol when it is treated with ethylene oxide; it becomes Polysorbate 20, which is 20 parts ethylene oxide. The treatment is the issue; 1,4-dioxane is a known animal carcinogen the gets into the skin very quickly and easily. If your baby were exposed to this infrequently it wouldn’t be a concern; if you’re like most parents you use baby wipes all day every day. Why expose your baby to a known animal carcinogen?
Little Toes does not and will NEVER use Polysorbate 20 in any of our baby wipes we are committed to helping you give your baby the best.
Parabens
Would you knowingly allow a babysitter to use something that is known to allergic skin reactions and rashes? Well, if your baby wipes contain methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, and isobutylparaben, it has parabens, and that’s precisely what you are doing. The issue with parabens is the work as a weak estrogen having too much estrogen can wreak havoc on a baby’s body. Remember, your baby is small, and you use baby wipes on a lof of their body surface. According to the Breast Cancer Organization parabens can increase the hormone-receptor-positive types of breast cancer, and numerous studies have revealed intact paraben molecules inside breast cancers and other tissues.
Phenoxyethanol
Phenoxyethanol works as a stabilizer, antibacterial agent, or a preservative to prevent products from losing their potency or spoiling. While it is believed to be a safer preservative, it can still cause infant skin irritation like eczema and central nervous conditions.
Back in 2008, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recalled it as unsafe for breastfeeding infants, due to concerns about how it affects their central nervous system. For this reason alone, it’s a good idea to avoid it. Remember, a lot of sensitive skin brands still use phenoxyethanol in their baby wipes.
Little Toes decided to keep phenoxyethanol out of our baby wipes.
Fragrance
We believe fragrance can enhance the value of a baby wipe; that said, we use natural chamomile to give our baby wipes its scent. We would never use any chemical fragrance; the fewer chemicals in your baby wipes, the better. Many natural baby wipes take advantage of a loophole that enables them to list it as “fragrance” without telling you about all the ingredients in their baby wipes. Most baby wipe fragrances are derived from petroleum and contain phthalates, VOCs, and other chemicals and irritants. That said, don’t just shop for “no scent” wipes look for masking agents.
Little Toes decided from day one we were going to deliver a better product with total transparency. We tell you every ingredient in our baby wipes.
Formaldehyde-releasing agents
According to a US EPA Office of Air and Radiation Report from 1989 the EPA made the classification that formaldehyde is a probable human carcinogen under conditions of unusually high or prolonged exposure. Not only this, but in recent years, formaldehyde has been linked to cancer, skin irritation and allergic reactions.
So why do companies still use formaldehyde-releasing agents in their diapers? We have no idea you will have to ask them. Why does Little Toes? Because we are committed to giving your baby the best ingredients available.
WHAT MATTER WHEN CHOOSING A BABY WIPE?
Thickness, packaging and size matter
When you need a baby wipe thin wipes won’t get the job done, so thickness is an important factor. Flimsy packaging will make it challenging to get the baby wipe out of the package, again when you need that baby wipe you need it! Lastly we have bigger baby wipes 5.9” x 7.9 to get the job done!
Availability
Why worry if your baby wipes are in stock at the store you are shopping when you remember you only have a couple of wipes left. Why not take advantage of our monthly subscription service, get your diapers and wipes delivered (no shipping charge) and save money, plus you won’t run out!
Your baby’s needs
Does your baby have sensitive skin? Do they get diaper rashes? Do they have any specific allergies? Consider these needs when choosing the best baby wipes for your baby.
Little Toes considered all these issues and more when we put our formulation together. Bamboo has natural ant-bacterial properties that fight odor-causing bacteria. Bamboo makes our baby wipes very soft; they are organically smooth without any of the harsh chemicals listed in the previous section.
WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?
We don’t share this information to scare parents; we share it so parents can make an informed decision. Transparency is part of our DNA, we love that our customers want to know everything that’s in their baby wipes, and we want to make sure they know it too.
